Chris Smyth

Digital & UX Director

Chris started BoldLight back in 2012 with the aim of combining his expertise in User Experience Design, multimedia production and digital design to create great campaigns for charities. Since then BoldLight have worked on a diverse range of projects from highly successful banner ad and email campaigns to in-depth User Experience Design projects, original animations and branded websites.

Chris has the essential good designer’s qualities of creativity and an eye for detail, making his work beautiful and persuasive as well as functional. He is passionate about understanding how to meet the needs of users and providing the best possible online experience for charity supporters.

Prior to setting up BoldLight Chris worked as Lead User Experience Designer at Citrix (where one of his innovative software designs has been patented) and as Web Designer for several non-profit organisations. He is a song-writer and multi-instrumentalist, volunteers for a local wildlife charity and recently built a printing press.

Ruth Smyth

Planning & Insight Director

Ruth joined BoldLight in 2014, bringing with her expertise in research and charity fundraising along with top notch project management and communication skills. During her 8 years with the RSPB Ruth led the Insight and Analysis functions and managed one of the charity’s largest improvement projects, the development of a ‘Single Supporter View’ and communications platform. Alongside her work at the RSPB Ruth helped to set up the ‘Common Cause for Nature’ project to understand how we can better engage a wider public in saving nature.

Ruth’s passion is understanding and, communicating with people. She likes to use research and data to understand audiences and apply this to make the experience of supporting a charity as good as it can possibly be. With experience in audience segmentation and planning, qualitative research and data analysis she uses a range of tools and techniques to do this.

Ruth is a committee member of the ‘Insight in Fundraising’ group (part of the Institute of Fundraising), a member of the British Psychological Society and a member of the International Advisory Panel at Rogaré (the fundraising thinktank based at Plymouth University).
